It Has Begun
As many of you know I planted birdhouse gourds awhile ago and they have been growing just fine. There have been no issues with bugs or anything like that (the smell is probably keeping them away.. lol) .
They have been easy to grow. They do need lots of water.
I knew the gourd would need picking soon as the plant started to die a few weeks ago. I learned from reading that although the plant is dying you do not remove the gourds until their stem is completely brown.
I have been checking and checking and nothing until this morning. I don’t know how I missed it but I was able too “harvest” my first birdhouse gourd.
The gourd has started to turn brown too. Now I don’t know if harvesting it late makes a difference or not. If anyone knows please share.
There are 12 more and most of their stems have started to turn brown so just a matter of time.
Thanks for visiting!

Thank you. Now the next phase starts. Drying them out without losing them to rot. Keep your fingers crossed.

Congrats. Gourds are what we call “callebasse” in French? They dry out and are used in many parts of the world to transport liquids, food?

Thanks. Callebasse sounds a lot “prettier” than gourds. I will be using the smallest ones for decorations and the larger ones as bird houses.

Sounds like a good plan. Actually “gourde” with an E, is the water bottle you take camping or hiking. 🙂

Here in the US we don’t use the “e” on the end. I plan on decorating them and making them birdhouses.

Sounds like a good plan. Birds should love them. Do you have many birds at your place. It seems like you’re at the edge of the woods. 🙂

There are plenty of birds and a lot of the are small. I should not have a hard time “booking reservations”. 😁😉
