Extension Tubes or filters?
I just purchased a set of extension tubes and macro filters so that I could get better macro shots. The extension tubes ran about $70 and the set of filters (7) was about $25. Cost wise, as most of you know, it is better than getting a true macro lens (for now anyway).
The extension tubes are a bit tricky to use. I did not do enough research prior to purchase to know that there was a difference in the types of tubes that you can get. You have manual and autofocus luckily I go the set that can do autofocus.
It has only been a few hours of playing and so far I am happy with them. It will take me a minute to figure out the right combination to get the image that I am looking for.
What are your thoughts on using filters or extension tubes?
Here are a few examples SOOC (straight out of camera).

I tried the extension tubes. I returned them – they were okay – and my husband already owned the macro lens. So if I’m doing that kind of work, I use the macro lens.

The extension tubes will take some time to get down and truly learn what combination work best. I do wish I just had a better macro. I do have a basic one 35mm macro but it does not alwas get the quality that I want.

Thanks Brian! iphones are great as well. I also use my cell (Note 4) for some pictures too and they come out great as well. I just like a “full” camera and want to learn about settings etc.

I understand perfectly. Just “teasing”. (Plus the fact that the more years i carry, the lighter I like to travel. Otherwise I would need a good camera, and several lenses even a tripod.

I don’t know enough about extension tubes or filters to express an opinion on those things, but will say that if they cost less than the macro lens I’d like to have, I should look into it. 🙂 Although it doesn’t have the sharpness you might be going for, I love the first shot. There is something mysterious about the softness of it.

Yes the extension tubes are considerably less than an actual macro lens. I think lighting plays a big part in the clarity with the tubes. The first shot is technecially incorrect in all ways but I too like it.
